When I think of motion design, I do not primarily mean motion graphics, (I can do that too), but to me it means many things all to do with movement. Which also has many forms.

Prototyping can be done rapidly for working out how the page should flow. I believe prototypes are a very important design tool to help "show" the story, not just tell. Showing the interactions between the elements on the page is very helpful and leaves out any ambiguity for the flow and layout of a design.

If a picture can tell a 1,000 words, a prototype can save you from explaining 10,000 words. When you have very complex interactions, or the final stages of design, prototyping can help inform the dev team and stakeholders of your design intentions and intended flow. It can also save you a lot of developer budget by nailing down your product flow and interactions on the screen.

When you have a very complex interactions I usually use Motion Graphics with After Effects to demonstrate motion on a page that would take a very long time to program or impossible to do with a prototyping tool. This could also be used for the marketing of your digital product.
